Sorrows in the Philippines

This post is also available in: Spanish

Our Lady of Sorrows is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. It is also known as Our Lady of Bitterness, Virgin of Mercy, Our Lady of Sorrows, Our Lady of Charity, Virgen of Solitude or La Dolorosa. Her feast day is Friday of Sorrows or the 15th of September; her clothing is normally black or purple. (Taken from Wikipedia Article In Spanish)

The iconography of the Virgin of Sorrows in the Philippines is a product of the influence of the Spaniards who expressed their influence on the way they dress. The Philippine version of Our Lady of Sorrows is very similar to the Virgin of Solitude, for the Virgin of Solitude retains the old way of dressing that is depicted in the image of Our Lady of Sorrows.

In this post, I present seven depictions of our Lady of Sorrows which are venerated in the Philippines, my beloved nation.

Salve, mar de penas.
Salve, triste Madre.
Salve, Dolorosa,
llena de piedades.

Ruega por nosotros,
Dolorosa Madre.

Después del destierro
muéstranos afable,
a Jesús tu hijo,
fruto deleitable.

Ruega por nosotros,
Dolorosa Madre.

Todos tus esclavos,
a tus pies leales
piden de sus culpas,
perdón les alcances.

Ruega por nosotros,
Dolorosa Madre.
