Today several dozen Catholics including myself had the opportunity in helping out with a Rosary Crusade for the defense of marriage between one man and one woman. This event was sponsored by both TFP and its partner American Needs Fatima. For those of you who may not know who TFP is (The Society for the Defense of Tradition, Family, and Property), this group is an organization of lay Catholic Americans concerned about the moral crisis shaking the remnants of Christian civilization. Its earliest origins date back to January 1971, when the first TFP members started to group around the publication Crusade for a Christian Civilization.
I think that this is one of the best coarse of action that faithful Catholic laity can best do in defense of Catholic morality such ash the Pro-Life cause as well as in the defense of marriage. We can’t always rely on the clergy, and especially on higher clergy such as bishops and cardinals to make the first moves in defense of the moral order and Catholic morality. This is true for several reasons. For example Catholic clergy of whatever rank can’t always be out in the front lines. This means that the laity have much more flexibility in hosting events and using social media for the Catholic cause. Second of all it is simply quite obvious that in this modern situation that we sadly find ourselves, various ecclesiastical authorities such as priests, bishops and cardinals are not always on board when it comes to the defense of Catholic morality. Archbishop Cordileone, Cardinal Burke and several others are some rare examples.
These grassroots approaches are really effective especially if they are planned and carried out effectively. Here in Orange County we have done these Rosary Crusades for a few years. We started out with but a few individual volunteers and this is true all the way till last year. This year the amount almost quadrupled as we had close to 50 individuals. This number may still seem very small, but these grassroots events can take time until they get momentum and get larger.
I give great credit to various Catholic events such as One Life LA, the various March for Life events, as well as the various TFP sponsored events as well. Not only should faithful Catholics use these grassroots resources and local events but even more powerful is the effective use of social media and the Catholic media. It is clear that the secular media does not want to cover anything which does not fit in conformity with their secularized, atheistic and immoral agenda. This is true when they fail to cover the pro life Washington D.C annual events which draws more than 500,000 individuals from all around the United States.
